April 22, 2020

Morningside is now ISO 27001:2013 certified, as featured in Slator, the leading translation industry news site. The article discusses how Morningside obtained the certificate and why ISO 27001 is so important, especially during times of increased remote working.

New York, NY— Morningside today announced that it has achieved ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification, the international standard for information security management systems (ISMS). This is a significant benchmark for Morningside, which is now the first major patent translation and filing company in the world to obtain this certification, and one of only a handful of language service providers (LSPs) to have achieved it.

Morningside has 20 years of experience in IP services and legal and life sciences language services where quality and accuracy are paramount. As a trusted partner to thousands of global organizations, Morningside maintains a rigorous quality management system and is officially certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, and ISO 17100:2015. To achieve this latest ISO 27001 certification, TÜV SÜD, a leading international auditing company, independently inspected Morningside’s ISMS against 114 controls.

“We put an enormous investment and priority on data and system security in the last few years as our clients made it clear how important these issues would be in the years to come,” said Morningside’s co-CEO Tom Klein.  “Information security management is now top of the list across the board from Chief IP Counsels to law firm practitioners to health information and regulatory professionals.”

What is ISO 27001?

ISO 27001 is an extensive framework of requirements for “establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an information security management system.” It ensures that business information is handled in a confidential and secure manner, and that appropriate care is taken to mitigate risks that could potentially compromise the integrity of client data. Achieving this prestigious certification is no small feat and demonstrates complete commitment to client data, systems, and processes.

How did Morningside become certified?

In order to meet the ISO 27001 standard, Morningside teams invested 18 months of time, during which the company implemented 114 physical, operational, and technical controls and underwent extensive audits by multiple security experts. To maintain the certificate, a dedicated team of Morningside Quality Assurance experts will continue to oversee the numerous ISO 27001 controls, which cover (but are not limited to):

  • access control
  • backups and redundancies
  • communications security
  • cryptography
  • information classification
  • information security for business continuity
  • media handling
  • physical security
  • protection from malware
  • teleworking and mobile devices

What does ISO 27001 mean for Morningside’s clients?

“It means that our client’s data is protected against any malicious actors,” said Roland Lessard, Morningside’s co-CEO. “It means that all of our processes and systems, including our industry-leading IP Platform and Gateway platform, offer the highest level of data security in accordance with industry best standards and practices, and that we have technologies in place to keep our data and systems secure even when people are working remotely. That’s especially important under current circumstances.”
